The Local Area

Thuir is situated just 20 minutes from the coast and 20 minutes from the Spanish border and the Pyrenees. The town is set in a part of France that is steeped in medieval history, particularly associated with the Holy Grail myths and the crusades.

In close proximity to Thuir are the city of Perpignan and numerous small villages and towns, many of which have been built into the mountains offering spectacular views of the area. Close to Thuir are the foothills of the Pyrenees and Canigou. Further into the Pyrenees, is the small principality of Andorra with its duty-free shopping and several ski and spa resorts.

Further East are the historic towns of Carcassonne and Beziers and the beautiful Canal du Midi. Along the coast towards the Spanish border are the popular beach resorts of Argeles sur Mer and Collioure and in Spain, the coastal towns of Roses, Figueres and Barcelona are less than two and a half hours away.

The area is ideal for cycling, walking and historic sight-seeing. Historic ruins such as the Chateaux of Peyrepertuse and Queribus blend into the mountainous landscapes and the Route des Vins offers a stunning scenic drive.
