Food and Wine
Local produce
Thuir is a typical French Market Town offering a variety of local bakeries, delicatessens, shops, cafes and restaurants. On the outskirts of Thuir are two supermarkets, with more extensive hypermarket facilities available near Perpignan.
As well as the shops providing a wonderful selection of pastries, fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables; Thuir’s thriving Saturday morning market is a feast to the eyes and the stomach!
In addition to the shops and market in Thuir, visitors need only drive a few minutes out of Thuir from Mas San Julian to purchase fresh produce direct from the farmer; whilst our friendly neighbour is always delighted to supply freshly laid eggs and home-made honey.
Lovely restaurants
Thuir is surrounded by pretty villages and towns offering fantastic sight-seeing and great eating. Thuir itself offers a wide variety of good restaurants serving local Catalan delicacies, crepes, pizza, pasta and traditional French cuisine.
In nearby Castlenou, large entrecotes and snails are a speciality and further afield in Perpignan (just 15 minutes by car), you can enjoy a range of international cuisine and a great selection of local wines for very reasonable prices.
Wine
The vineyards of the Languedoc Rousillon cover more than 300,000 hectares (740,300 acres) and supply one in ten bottles of the world’s wine and one in three bottles of French wine.
If you are a wine enthusiast, there’s no better place to come to sample the many local wines. Areas such as Banyuls and Collioure produce quality wines and the numerous local caves will allow you to taste their wines prior to purchase.
Wine around Thuir is reasonably priced and of exceptional quality. Across the border in Spain there is also a range of local vineyards to choose from.
Shopping
Thuir and its market provide an interesting array of local gifts and artisan products. 12 km away in Perpignan are a wide range of shops selling clothes, sports equipment and toys. The old town of Perpignan is particularly good for interesting gifts and boutiques selling designer clothing.
A trip to Gerona – just 40 minutes away – will give you a fabulous day out shopping and sight-seeing and it is possible to visit a local market in the surrounding areas of Thuir and on the Spanish borders every day of the week. |
